Eden is an unforgettable experience for all ages alike. Set
in a breathtaking location, it is a gateway into the fascinating world of
plants and people and a vibrant reminder of how we need each other for our
mutual survival.
Eden is a dramatic global garden the size of thirty football pitches nestling like a lost world in a crater overlooking St Austell Bay. One of the giant conservatories is a majestic rainforest cathedral, the other, a host to the wild habitats and crops of the Mediterranean and the flowers of South Africa and California. Outside, in the landscaped grounds you can find tea and lavender, sunflowers and hemp, and a multitude of crops that grow in our own climate.
It is a place to tell 100 plant stories from cocoa and
coffee to bananas and rubber. From plants and medicine to plants in
construction. From paper to wine and from perfume to brewing.
The
Eden Project’s mission is to show how we share our world with plants, how
throughout history and before we have depended on them for the air that
we breathe, the clothes that we wear, the food that we eat and the shelter we
need from the elements. In addition, the Eden Project hopes to share with us
the importance of knowing how to use these valuable sustainable resources so
that we can all take responsibility for the future of our planet.
Sometimes, this is not always easy to grasp, particularly for those of us living
in a society where these things are provided without us having to give them a
second thought.
The Conception
From a hastily scribbled sketch on the back of a cigarette packet, to what is being hailed as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ the Eden Project’s journey from conception to reality has been a thrilling one.
Cornwall has become the focus of the world’s attention as a giant china clay quarry has been transformed into a spectacular, almost space age complex, where plants and people will work together to highlight their unique relationship for generations to come.
It
was one team with one vision which has delivered a piece of history that arguably
will be impossible to surpass; a dramatic blend of science and pure theatre
on a mission to promote the vital principles of ensuring a sustainable future
for everyone on the planet.
In 1994 Tim Smit, whilst driving round the china clay quarry landscape of St. Austell, saw his vision of building the world’s largest greenhouse, housing exhibits showing the remarkable relationship between man and plants. In 1995 a world-class team of international reputation that had already made its mark with the much-coveted design for Waterloo International Station was assembled to bring Eden to life.
Now all they needed was money - £86m of it to be precise.
